Extended Speaker Bios:

Keynote speaker Paul MacCready, PhD, is founder and chairman of AeroVironment, Inc., which specializes in innovating efficient, alternatively-fueled vehicles for land, sea, and air. In 1977, his Gossamer Condor won the $95,000 award offered by British industrialist Henry Kremer for the first sustained, controlled human-powered flight. The plane now hangs in the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., beside the Wright Brothers' 1903 Flyer and Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis. Since then, Dr. MacCready has led teams that have created many additional pioneering vehicles. Working in conjunction with General Motors, Dr. MacCready and his group developed the GM-Impact, a battery-powered car with remarkable performance that became the catalyst for recent developments in alternatively-fueled vehicles. In 1998, the solar-powered Pathfinder II, a huge, remotely-piloted descendant of the Solar Challenger, reached the stratospheric altitude of 80,200 feet- the highest a propeller plane has ever flown. Dr. MacCready has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and international honors, including the 1982 Lindbergh Award for his "significant contributions toward creating a better balance between technology and the environment."

Jesse H. Ausubel is Director of the Program for the Human Environment and Senior Research Associate at The Rockefeller University in New York City. Mr. Ausubel's interests include environmental science and technology, industrial evolution, and the nature of the scientific enterprise. The main themes of the Rockefeller research program are industrial ecology (the study of the network of all industrial processes as they may interact with each other and live off each other, a field Mr. Ausubel helped originate) and the long-term interactions of technology and the environment. Mr. Ausubel has played major roles in national and international awareness and research of several environmental topics, including global warming and oceanic life. He has also authored and edited more than 100 articles, reports and books.

Dr. Richard P. Hallion is an eminent aviation historian and author of “Taking Flight; Inventing the Aerial Age.” He is the former Air Force Historian and now serves in dual roles as the Historical Advisor for the Air Force Centennial of Flight Committee and the Advisor on Historical Matters for Air Force Special Projects in Acquisitions in Washington, D.C. Dr. Hallion graduated from the University of Maryland in 1970. He has broad experience in museum development, and historical research and management analysis, and has served as a consultant to various professional organizations. Also, he has flown a range of military and civilian fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. Dr. Hallion is the author of more than 15 books relating to aerospace history, including the history of the Guggenheim Fund for which he conferred with Charles Lindbergh just before Lindbergh's death. He also teaches and lectures widely.

Eric Hopkins is an aerial landscape painter, student pilot, gallery owner and lifelong resident of North Haven Island, Maine. With broad strokes and bright colors, Hopkins captures the dynamic forces and patterns of nature and the big picture of wide open spaces. Mr. Hopkins’ work is integrated with technology to include an active and very visual website (erichopkins.com), digital video and still photography. He has given numerous lectures and workshops, and has worked as a studio assistant to Dale Chihuly and Italo Scanga. Eric Hopkins Gallery, located in his great-grandfather's ship chandlery on Hopkins Wharf on North Haven, is open year-round and has been in operation since 1990. Longtime friend of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s family, Anne Morrow Lindbergh admired Hopkins’ work and perspective, visited his studio and gallery, and included one of his paintings in her collection.

Cliff Robertson is one of America’s foremost dramatic actors and the only actor to have won the Academy Award (Oscar), Emmy Award (Best Actor T.V.), and Theatre World Award (Stage), as well as the Advertising-Age Award (Best T.V. Commercial, AT&T). Mr. Robertson is also a licensed commercial pilot, and he maintains and flies a stable of classic vintage aircraft as well as a record-setting glider. He has won many aviation awards, including the Experimental Aircraft Association Award, the Soaring Society of America Award, and the A.O.P.A. William Sharples Award for Rescue Flying in Africa. An avid sportsman (tennis and skiing), Mr. Robertson has appeared in many charity competitions, and over the years he has contributed his time to more than 50 national charities.

Reeve Lindbergh, daughter of aviator-authors Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was born in 1945 and grew up with her three brothers and her sister in Connecticut. Mrs. Lindbergh graduated from Radcliffe College in 1968 and moved to Vermont, where she has been teaching, writing and raising a family ever since. She is the award-winning author of 17 books for children and five books for adults. She serves on the board of directors for The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation, a Minnesota non-profit organization seeking balance between technological advancement and environmental wisdom. She lives near St. Johnsbury, Vermont, with her husband, Nathaniel Tripp, and their family. Mrs. Lindbergh will offer closing remarks for the symposium.
